From the beginning, we've built options so that all students can participate, even those in rural areas with wells, those who live in apartments, and even those experiencing housing instability. After all, it's often these families that could benefit the most from utility efficiency.

The costs are covered for teachers by water and energy utility providers who see tremendous value in empowering youth with utility data: (1) to help our communities use resources more effciently; (2) to spread awarness within underserved communities of assistance available; (3) to encourage young people to consider careers in the water and energy fields.
As a web-based program, MeterHero is compatible across all internet connected devices. However, MeterHero provides resources to allow students without smartphone or internet access to record readings by hand (then enter them online later from a school or library computer).
Researchers at Loyola University Chicago and Marquette University conducted a randomized control study of how MeterHero’s use of real and personal data with students impacts their sense of self efficacy and desire to pursue STEM activities. The positive results were published in a scholarly academic Journal: Condon, M. & Wichowsky, A. (2018).
